The new edgy SciFi signature series “Stargate Universe” promises lots of excitement while moving away from the fun, relaxed Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis formula.

The series preview has something of a horror movie with the tagline “The only mission is to survive”.
SGU’s new tantalizing clip has certainly put lots of fans mind at ease. The first rumors surrounding the series had many fans fearing for a Stargate 90210, teen version.

The cast
But SGU has found itself a great cast including Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty, Trainspotting, The world is not enough, The Beach, 28 weeks leater, 24: Redemption) which features prominently in “Frantic” the hot and hyped SG:U preview.

Other actors include Lou Diamond Phillips, Justin Louis, Brian J. Smith, Elyse Levesque, David Blue, Alaina Huffman, Jamil Walker Smith, and Ming-Na.

Kickoff episode
The 2hour Stargate Universe pilot titled “Air” is rumoured to star Richard Dean Anderson aka Jack O’Neill from Stargate SG-1.
Stargate alumni Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) and Robert Picardo (Richard Woolsey) have also shown interest in making an appearance during the show’s first season.

If you ever doubted the Star Trek franchise could be revived, doubt no more. The wizzkid creator of tv hits ‘Lost’ and ‘Fringe’, J.J. Abrams has come to the rescue and rescuscitated the patient!

Last year Stargate SG-1 got cancelled, now another gate closes down… but you can’t send a great tv series in oblivion! Bad news aside, 2008 proves to be a HUGE Stargate year!

Stargate SG-1 survived several cast changes, spawned a succesful sister series Stargate Atlantis and the show’s heroes were victorious against many foes. But the show starring Richard Dean Anderson, Beau Bridges and Amanda Tapping didn’t survive the number crunching bureaucrats at SciFi Channel’s headquarters.

More bad news…

Now after 5 succesful seasons, Stargate Atlantis also needs to close down.

SciFi channel wants a noughties scifi series with a younger cast, as apparently Stargate Atlantis is too much "nineties" for them.

But hang on there’s loads of good news too!

Birth of a new Stargate!

And so, a new Stargate series will grace our television screens: Stargate Universe.

The series will feature a fresh cast and the much liked Stargate touch but with a darker edge than fans are used.

The storyline will center around a Stargate crew trapped on board an ancient spaceship.

Stargate universe will fill the void other spaceship based scifi series like Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica left behind.

The bad news aside, 2008 actually proves to be a huge Stargate year so far.

Two direct to DVD Stargate SG-1 movies have been released with impressive domestic sales numbers:
* Stargate SG-1: Ark of Truth first week sales 251,642 units ($4.2 million)
* Stargate SG-1: Continuum first week sales 251,642 units ‘$4.8 million)

With such great numbers, more movies seem likely!

Also a Stargate Atlantis movie, has already been commisioned. It’ll be a standalone movie as the show’s producer Joseph Malozzi announced that the 100th and final Stargate Atlantis episode won’t end on a cliffhanger.

And that’s not all! Also the highly anticipated video game Stargate Worlds will see the light of day this year. The previews for the game so far have all been promising!

The sixth person ever to walk on the moon, a veteran of the Apollo 14 mission and a respected scientist, that’s Dr Edgar Mitchell. Now he shocks the world by claiming aliens have made contact with the humankind and it’s been going on for quite a while.

Dune

What didn’t work for the disastrous "Dune Movie" in 1984 (in development hell since 1971), worked splendid in this SciFi miniseries.

Costumes, music, actors all fitted the legendary story by Frank Herbert perfectly and the special effects enhanced the experience even more.

"Dune" was SciFi channel’s most watched production ever at that time and a hugely succesful follow-up "Children Of Dune" was released in 2003.

Some recent HOT Hollywood gossip claimed that movie studios have quietly commissioned a screenplay for a brand new Dune movie. Hopefully more news on that soon… to be continued!

Battlestar Galactica

The original seventies show was once conceived as a Star Wars competitor. But while the original didn’t live up to the hype, its SciFi remake certainly did!

Battlestar Galactica tells the story of the doomed human race. Defeated by robots man once created to serve them – the Cyclons. Mankind is on the run and Battlestar Galactica is their only hope for survival. It’s the only battleship left to protect the fleet with survivors.

The plot has lots of twists and the characters a lot of depth. This is one of the most chilling and exciting TV shows out there thanks in part to an extremely talented cast.

Stargate SG-1

If you want some great fun, Stargate SG-1 is an excellent choice!

The show’s creators have perfected their storylines with the right mixture of adventure, special effects, humor and a well balanced team of main characters.

While the show now has a sister series called ‘Stargate Atlantis’, Stargate SG-1 originally started as a spinoff to the 1994 blockbuster ‘Stargate’. After 10 seasons on television the show goes on in the form of direct to DVD movies.

Scully and Mulder are back in the new X-files movie ‘The X-Files: I Want to Believe’ (2008)!

But nothing can outshine the feel (and hype that came along with it) of the original series. The chilling X-files tune, conspiracy theories, murder…

The show still is the highlight for David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and the show’s creator Chris Carter.

Star Trek

The classic scifi phenomenon has had so many iterations it’s hard to keep score.

The movies, the original show and follow-ups like Voyager, Deep Space Nine, Star Trek and maybe the most memorable Star Trek: The Next Generation with appearances by Whoopi Goldberg and Patrick Steward as captian Jean Luke Picard.

It’s an enormous franchise even though the hype surrounding it has died down. You should get ready for a new round of Trekkie Mania when ‘Lost’ creator J.J. Abrams releases his own Star Trek Movie in theaters May 2009!
